Lynnette is currently enjoying Mataro (Mourvèdre if you’re French or Monastrell if you’re Spanish) it has a special affinity with the Barossa Valley where it has been grown for more than 5 generations (some Mataro vines have been dated back to the 1850’s!)  The conditions are perfect for growing Mataro because it needs warm growing conditions:  long, hot summers and dry autumns.

Mataro is more well-known for being the perfect partner with Shiraz and Grenache.  Finally, Mataro is stepping out from the shadow of the other two varieties into its own spotlight!  Tim Smith has done a lot to make this variety shine on its own.  Tim’s Mataro is everything a Mataro should be:  earthy, savoury and yet have some lovely fruit up front.  Lifted Asian five spice on the nose, mingled with hints of pepper and cloves.  In the background lurk aromas of meat and game.

To me, this is the perfect wine to have on a cold, winter’s night.   It goes so well with all the good things I like about winter:  big hearty casserole or a satisfying steak.  If I don’t feel like cooking, this wine is perfect to enjoy on its own.  The problem is that one glass just isn’t enough –very easy to have another glass... and another...
