Why only Australian wine

If we’re to take you to wine’s outermost pleasures, why do we only offer Australian wines? Why no French wine? Because the most exciting wines in the world right now are coming from the 600 million-year old “New World” soils of Australia.

“I have more pleasure drinking Australian wines than
even the great wines of France.”

Matthew Jukes, UK Wine Critic.

A great wine term: “terroir”
The French have a great wine term: “terroir”. It refers to the unique qualities that a wine draws from its soil, water and environs. It’s a term that helps explain why Australian wines are so distinctive.

Great soil produces fine Australian wine

Our soils are not only rich and fertile, but infinitely varied. Which wine country in the world can offer this diversity?

  • Black silty loams of the upper Hunter Valley
  • Gravelly sands of the Margaret River
  • Grey-brown sandy loams of the Adelaide Hills
  • Red clays of Heathcote in Victoria
  • Ancient sandstones and limestones of Tasmania
  • Fabled terra rossa of the Coonawarra.
Wine grapes blessed by Australian sun
Our Terroir advantages go beyond our soils. Our wine fruit is also blessed by the unique and multi-faceted Australian climate: our wind, our water and our precious sunlight.

Australia’s winemakers lead the world

But ultimately it’s the skill and imagination of our winemakers that is turning the wine world on its ear. Our elite winemakers are pursuing their craft with creativity, vigour and a disregard for the established order.

As Peter Dredge of Petaluma says, “Education, passion and enthusiasm echo through many Australian wineries”.

A new world order in wine
Old world connoisseurs are beginning to note a changing of the guard. Writing in Decanter, UK wine critic Matthew Jukes declared, “I have more pleasure drinking Australian wines than even the great wines of France.” And his is not a lone voice.

Australian wine taking on the world

Until now, Australian wines have been acclaimed for their value. But we’ve gone beyond that. As Michael Hill-Smith of Shaw & Smith says, “We relish the chance to pit our top wines against all comers.”
